Is the United States a Christian Nation?

  • Is the United States a Christian nation?

  • Are Christians under attack in the United States?

  • Should Christianity be "privileged" in public and private life?

If you answer "no" to these questions, you are probably leaning left/liberal - accusing conservatives of pushing their religious values into the way schools and government operate.

If you say "yes" to these questions, you are probably leaning right/conservative - accusing liberals of trying to keep religious values out of schools and government.

How would you answer the question "Is Christian Nationalism a religion?" Trick question, Christian Nationalism is not a type of religion, it's a political ideology, exclusionary and quite rigid in ideology. Dr. Andrew Whitehead, author of Taking America Back for God, defines Christian nationalism as "an ideology that idealizes and advocates a fusion of American civic life with a particular sense of Christian identity and culture." Christian Nationalists claim that a nation is Christian if its citizens are Christians and that biblical principles (as they interpret them) shape laws, their interpretation and enforcement. For example, listen to Pastor Joel Webbon, who advocates an end to woman's suffrage: "It's because we love women - and we know that when women vote, they vote for being raped." This kind of thinking comes from a religious bias which is not the message that Jesus taught.

Larry Beck in his article "My God! America's White Christian Right is So Wrong" begins: "The resurgence of White Christian nationalism in America mirrors historical religious extremism, eroding the separation of church and state while merging faith with exclusionary politics. This fusion often contradicts christian values, promoting oppressive and contradictory agendas. The movement aims to revive a mythologized, unjust past, threating the nation's progress and inclusivity."

At the annual convention of the College Theology Society, a group brings together professors and students from Catholic colleges and universities, they held joint discussions with the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion on the topic of "Reclaiming Faith Amid Christian Nationalism". Natalie Bruzon of Spectrum Magazine concluded her article "Christian Nationalism isn't Hiding Anymore" with the following: "The conversation is no longer about whether MAGA has corrupted Christianity. The evidence is there for those who wish to see it. The question now is why so many Christians feel comfortable with the corruption of the sacred."

The Pew Research Center issued a report, How Americans Feel About Religion's Influence in Government and Public Life, showing there are sharp partisan divides over the influence of religion today. They found that most people want churches (and other houses of worship) to stay out of politics. And, most people reject the idea that Christianity should be America's "official religion" even though they make the distinction that government can promote Christian moral values.
